I developed and ran dedicated chronic disease care clinics at Hillbrow Hospital in Johannesburg [1976 - 1986], at Benedictine Hospital and its rural satellite clinics in Nongoma in the then KwaZulu homeland [1990 - 1991] and at Alexandra Health Centre and University Clinic in Alexandra township in Johannesburg [1991].

The notes, reports, presentations and guidelines in this section derive from that experience. The list is incomplete.

  3. Clinic-retained record sheets.
    Shortened and updated versions of record sheets used for entering data on patients suffering from asthma (now subsumed in COLD – chronic obstructive lung disease), diabetes, epilepsy and hypertension. The initial version used from 1977 to 1986 was 4 pages long. Latest version 1991.

  5. Cost-effective control of common chronic conditions.
    An edited version of a health system review performed in 1985 at the request of the deputy superintendent at Hillbrow Hospital. In 1989 the findings were presented at a conference on health economics in South Africa. They were subsequently written up in a paper and submitted in turn to the Bulletin of the WHO, the South African Medical Journal and the British Medical Journal. The paper was not published. Latest revision 2006.

  7. Treatment of hypertension with magnesium chloride.
    Magnesium chloride was routinely issued to all patients with normal renal function at a hypertension clinic in Johannesburg. They were advised to use the salt in their food. The dose was low — 100 g over 4 weeks. Few complained of side-effects severe enough to inhibit use. A study on a small sample demonstrated blood pressure reduction. The findings were presented at a Southern African Hypertension Society Congress in 1985.
